This presentation will focus on assessing the need for child testimony, the suitability of the child witness, and entering the statements of children. Participants will learn basic linguistics and child development, as well as how to avoid trauma triggers to provide a child-centered approach in court and depositions. The presentation will highlight children’s language development, including syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Exercises will engage participants in the fundamentals of questioning children in a developmentally appropriate manner and will provide strategies to elicit recall of past events.
